Crowns

A crown is a fixed dental prosthetic that is cemented onto one of your teeth by one of Gulfside Dental's dentists It’s a cap that will be installed over a tooth to help it maintain its appearance, strength, and function. Additionally, a dental crown will be added to your treatment plan if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a cracked tooth.
  • You have a severely worn down tooth (from grinding or decay).
  • You recently have had a root canal. Root canal therapy leaves a tooth hollow; a crown will prevent bacterial re-infection and stop this tooth from cracking apart.
  • You have a misshapen or short tooth.

Our Naples dentist makes your crown at our office in Naples, Florida

Two visits are needed for this 5-step procedure:

  • X-rays are taken and the tooth is prepared (i.e root canal is done, etc)
  • You’re given anesthetic and the tooth is filed so the crown will fit securely.
  • To make the custom crown, an impression is taken of the tooth with a putty material.
  • A temporary cap will be installed until the permanent one is ready.
  • Your Naples dentist will make sure the fit and color are alright and will cement the permanent cap into place.

The whole process is painless, and once done the restored tooth does not require special care; just brush twice daily and floss at least once a day. With routine home care, our crowns last 10 to 15 years.

We offer three different types of crowns to pick from:

  • Full Metal: These are made of gold and resistant to chipping and breaking, but the color does not appear natural.
  • Tooth-colored crowns: different types of natural tooth colored crowns are available.

For all of your dentistry needs visit Gulfside Dental. We are proud to remain the preferred Naples dentist!

Post-Operative Instructions for Temporary Crowns & Bridges

  • Do not eat until the anesthetic wears off. Normally this takes a couple of hours, but can be longer. Some patients take more time for anesthetic to wear off and if you need to eat should try to consume foods you do not have to chew.
  • Expect some soreness or pain around the gum area for 24-48 hours. Over the counter medication should be sufficient.
  • Rinse with warm salt water for the first 24-48 hours.
  • When flossing the temporary crown, move the floss down and then pull out to the side, do not pull straight up.
  • If using an electric toothbrush, keep the power off around the area of the temporary.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods.

Some sensitivity to hot and cold is normal, a temporary crown is a temporary solution to cover your tooth.

It is important to call our office if the temporary comes out, as it holds the space for the permanent crown and not having it in can cause issues for placement of the permanent crown.

If the temporary comes out or if you have any problems, please call our office.
