Night Guards

A growing percentage of people unconsciously clench or grind their teeth together at night while sleeping. In the dental field this condition is called bruxism and can require the use of night guards. If left untreated, one of the following complications may eventually arise:

  • Worn or cracked teeth. This means you may need to get one or more crowns, fillings, or even dentures if the damage becomes severe.
  • Higher likelihood of developing cavities and/or tooth decay (The worn tooth enamel makes it easier for bacteria to invade them).
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder: A condition that affects the joint which connects the jaw to the skull. Also called TMJ, it causes headaches, facial swelling, and makes chewing and talking painful.

Teeth grinding normally occurs while asleep so if you constantly wake up with a dull headache or sore jaw then you should come see one of our Naples dentists so they can check your teeth for excessive wear.

Here at Gulfside Dental, your dentist may suggest a night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep. A night guard is a mouthpiece custom-fitted to your teeth that protects them from excessive grinding.

You could buy a night guard at the local drugstore but it will not be made for your mouth. If the over-the-counter guard is too large it could fall out of the mouth while you are sleeping. If this guard is too small then it won't protect all your teeth. Dr. McCash, Dr. Botero, or Dr. Reyes will examine which parts of your mouth are most affected by the grinding and customize a night guard that will provide maximum protection for your teeth.
