What You Need to Know

What Causes Loose Teeth?

Many factors can contribute to permanent teeth becoming loose such as gum disease, trauma or facial injury due to accidents or sports, and teeth grinding and clenching.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is caused by plaque and tartar buildup. Without treatment, gum disease will advance and result in gum recession. When your gums start to recede, the bone generally follows and it will be difficult to keep your teeth in place.

Bacteria can also destroy your tooth roots and the bone that supports them. To prevent your teeth from falling out, your dentist will treat your gum problem with antibiotics and a deep cleaning. Advanced bone loss needs referral to a periodontist, who will hopefully help you be able to keep your teeth with additional procedures.

Trauma and injury can also cause your teeth to come loose. If you get to the dentist on time, your tooth may still be saved. However, this will depend on the severity of the damage.

Teeth grinding and clenching can cause damage to the ligaments that connect your teeth to the bone. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is one of the leading causes of loose teeth. Thankfully, this problem can still be addressed if you see your dentist.

How Can It Be Fixed?

A common solution to loose teeth is to stabilize and attach them to adjacent teeth in a procedure known as splinting. Splinting is only a temporary fix that’s good for a couple of weeks. However, this should give your gum tissues and ligaments enough time to heal and strengthen around your teeth if they have been knocked loose due to trauma.

The splint is usually made of wire and resin and is used to attach the loose tooth to a neighboring tooth. For patients with bruxism, dentists recommend wearing a night guard to protect your teeth against further damage.
