How do you respond to a dental emergency? Believe it or not, most people don’t know what to do. They sleep it off thinking they can always have it fixed the next day. It’s important to know when you’ll need Naples, FL, emergency dental care, because once you’re able to identify an urgent case, you can help mitigate and prevent further, or permanent damage to your teeth, gums, or oral tissues.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Fractured, Cracked, and Chipped Tooth

If a tooth is chipped and it doesn’t hurt, you can wait until regular office hours to have it checked. Usually, your dentist will smoothen the chip and may add a dental filling to restore the shape and integrity of your chipped tooth.

But if your tooth is severely fractured or cracked, you’ll need emergency dental care. Call your emergency dentist right away. While you wait, clean your mouth by rinsing it with warm water. If the cause of the fracture is due to facial trauma, you may apply a cold pack on the affected side of your face to lessen the swelling.

Tissue Injury

Any injury that occurs in your tongue, mouth, cheeks, or lips, such as tears, lacerations, and wounds is considered a dental emergency. Again, you should call your emergency dentist and let them know what happened.

While waiting to be treated, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. If the problem is bleeding, take a clean piece of gauze and place it over the wound while applying pressure. This should help to control the bleeding. Get to the nearest clinic as quickly as possible. You may take over-the-counter pain killers, like acetaminophen, for the pain.
